There was another important decision to be made, and it would forever change the make-up of Australian spies. The review recommended that the Office of National Assessments (ONA) be turned into the Office of National Intelligence (ONI), with an augmented ability to supervise the nation’s other spy agencies. Whereas before the ONA primarily assessed foreign intelligence, its successor deals with intelligence relating to foreign as well as domestic threats. The agency is headed by Mike Burgess, one of a new breed of national security leader appointed by the Morrison government.
