Dubai Municipality has set new standards of technological excellence with its advanced aerial photography project currently being implemented using specialised survey aircraft. The aerial photography survey that has a high accuracy of 10 centimetres is one of the most important strategic projects being implemented by Dubai Municipality’s GIS Centre as part of its GeoDubai initiative. Maryam Obaid Al Muhairi, Director of the GIS Centre, said photographing and aerial surveying goes through many stages. Advanced technologies like automatic detection of changes in the available geospatial data and geospatial Artificial Intelligence optimize the extraction and update operations of geospatial data.

It also needs to be seen if satellite imagery can help determine the wealth levels of individuals. Satellite imagery has revealed that residents belonging to certain parts of south and north India were financially better off than their counterparts in Bihar and north-east India. However, rural Tuscany has a relatively low population density and, despite the size of its network, AdF serves only around 400,000 customers. Their mission to become a data-driven utility led to an initial deployment of Rezatec’s Geospatial AI Pipeline Risk product across 674 km of the AdF water network in a pilot programme launched in January 2021. The Pipeline Risk tool assesses these parameters against several years of historical network failure data to characterise the risk factors. Indeed, in adopting the Rezatec tool, AdF has joined much larger players, such as the Italian multi-utility HERA, in using high-tech geospatial AI solutions. Of these nine, six fall in an area showed as very high criticality, two in high criticality areas, and just one in a low criticality area as determined by the geospatial AI model.

UAF Gains Increased Computing Power That Can Save Lives

The computing cluster arrived at the UAF Geophysical Institute’s Alaska Satellite Facility earlier this year through funding by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. The addition of the high-performance computers marks a significant expansion of the Alaska Satellite Facility’s capabilities. The computing cluster, given the name Athena after the Greek goddess of wisdom and war, is designed for processing terrain imagery obtained by satellites for the US government. It will process image data faster and produce maps in greater detail than current systems and at a cost savings to the government. “This is a powerful demonstration of how technology implemented at UAF can benefit the nation and emphasizes the importance of the Alaska Satellite Facility and the University of Alaska in making that benefit a reality,” said Nettie La Belle-Hamer, director of the Alaska Satellite Facility and UAF’s interim vice chancellor for research.

In fact, NGA will establish a geospatial technology lab of their own within T-REX, directly next to Harris-Stowe’s new GeoHornet Lab. Dr. Higgs has taught geography and geographic subjects at Washington University, St. Louis University, and other St. Louis colleges and universities for over 20 years. Esri Releases New Predictive 2050 Global Land Cover Map
