Michigan State University group partners to harness the data revolution

Members of the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability will use $1 million to collaborate on a new NSF-funded national initiative to understand climate change and disaster risks and affects. A Michigan State University sustainability scholar and his colleagues are partners in a new $15 million national initiative to enable geospatial data-driven scientific discovery aimed at understanding the risks and affects of climate change and disasters. MSU’s role, funded at about $1 million, will be to apply the tele coupling framework to disentangle the complexity of globalization, climate change, and natural disasters. The new institute will bring together about 40 researchers from U of I, MSU, Columbia University, Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc., Florida International University, Open Geospatial Consortium, Purdue University, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, Utah State University, and a variety of other partners. NSF is investing $75 million to establish five new Harnessing the Data Revolution institutes as part of its “Big Idea” initiative.

Intelligence Agencies Pushed to Use More Commercial Satellites

In some quarters of the intelligence agencies, those lagging commercial capabilities have dampened enthusiasm for pushing forward with more private-sector contracts. The Senate version of this year’s Intelligence Authorization Act contains provisions to increase spending on commercial satellite programs. While the leadership of intelligence agencies is on board, there is still reluctance in some corners of the agencies to embrace commercial technology, according to congressional aides. Current and former congressional officials acknowledge the government still design and operate the most exquisite and innovative intelligence technology.

Near Space Labs send more Earth imaging robots to the stratosphere

Not so for Near Space Labs, a four-year-old company that instead aims to gather geospatial intelligence from the stratosphere, using small autonomous wind-powered robots attached to weather balloons. Near Space Labs also announced that Crosslink partner Phil Boyer has joined its board. Near Space focuses on urbanized areas where change happens rapidly. Near Space has booked over 540 flights through 2022. Looking ahead, the company will use the funds to expand its geographical footprint and bring on a bunch of new hires.

Jacobs Wins National GEOINT Agency Contract

They awarded Jacobs a contract by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) to provide mission-driven and data-centric solutions to support Geospatial-intelligence Enterprise Open Data Store (GEODS) services. The single-award indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) represents a $302 million contract value across a seven-year ordering period.
